November Photo Contest:  Portraits

A good portrait photo projects emotions that draw in viewers. The key to capturing an outstanding portrait is to focus on your subject. The image should reflect the subject’s personality, style and interests.  Remember the portrait has to be of a person or people!

  1. Camera options
    1. 1080 @ 24fps (60/120 or higher for slow motion)
    2. Auto White balance is okay
    3. ISO – as low as possible
    4. In a perfect world, shutter speed number should be twice fps
    5. Manual exposure has its place, say when walking in a room past a bright window
  2. Stabilize the camera
    1. Hand held – quick review of techniques
    2. Tripod – ideally with ‘fluid head’
    3. Gimbal (3 axis )
    4. In body image or in lens stabilization is great to have
  3. Shooting
    1. Change camera angles SLOOOWLY, moving in one direction, not back and forth
    2. Get one of each, if possible
      1. Wide – establishing (where are we)
      2. Medium – who or what is the subject
      3. Close – fill the screen with the action
      4. Extreme closeup – lets see the dots in the “i”’s
    3. Consider transitions
      1. Person or thing leaves the scene
      2. Thing moves behind something big in the foreground
      3. Pull up from looking down at ground
      4. Traveling into, out of small openings
    4. Perspectives
      1. Shoot living things at eye level, example “worms eye view”
      2. 3rd person and point of view
  4. Possible subjects
    1. Fountains shooting water up (play area)
    2. Peoples faces and activities
    3. Trains/peddle boats/etc
    4. Flowers
    5. Alligators?
